Images From The Sinkhole Site

The Barrett farm house, named “Old Girl” circa 1875, with Big Spring flowing into a restored spring pool. The spring emerges from beneath a limestone ledge in front of the steps and feeds into Flint Creek, a tributary of the Illinois River. During construction of a road next to the farm by the city of Springtown in February and March, mud plumes surged through Big Spring. Intense vibration from heavy trucks and a compression roller shook “Old Girl” and the surrounding property, causing the ground to collapse 100 feet southeast of the house. Water can be seen flowing through the bottom of the sinkhole possibly an underground spring feeder stream.
